Sleeves, Toploaders or Binders: How to Protect Your Cards

Card protection comes in layers. Each one does a different job, and the right mix depends on how valuable the card is and how you use it.
Sleeves: everyday protection
A sleeve protects the surface and edges from scratches, dust and fingerprints. Every card you play with or want to keep should be sleeved. Matte sleeves reduce glare and tend to shuffle smoothly; clear sleeves show the whole card.
Inner sleeves and double-sleeving
A close-fitting inner sleeve under a standard sleeve adds a second barrier against dust and moisture. Players often double-sleeve decks they use a lot, and collectors double-sleeve valuable cards.
Toploaders: rigid protection
A toploader is a rigid plastic holder. A sleeved card slides in from the top and is protected from bending. Toploaders are the standard way to store, ship and trade valuable cards.
Magnetic holders: display protection
Magnetic holders close around the card with a magnet. They are thicker and clearer than toploaders, which makes them popular for displaying your best pulls.
Binders: protection plus display
A binder keeps sleeved or unsleeved cards in pockets, so you can browse and show your collection. See HoloHive binders.
Boxes and cases: storage and transport
Deck boxes carry the deck you play. Storage boxes hold bulk cards or cards already in toploaders. Deck boxes and storage boxes.
A simple system
- Bulk cards: storage box.
- Cards you play: sleeves and a deck box.
- Cards you display: sleeves and a binder.
- Your most valuable cards: sleeve, toploader or magnetic holder, then a storage box.
